Toe Nail Surgery
The
problem with an ingrown toenail, is the nail itself. The nail plate
does not belong in the subcutaneous tissue and it causes a foreign body
reaction. The pain, redness and swelling are from your body's defense
system.
The procedure of choice is the phenol-alcohol procedure. This procedure
is usually performed in the clinic under local anaesthesia. After
numbing the toe, the ingrown border of the nail is removed and the root
is cauterized to prevent the nail from regrowing.
This is a permanent correction in 95% of cases.
After the procedure you can expect your toe to remain numb for several
hours. So few patients report discomfot that pain medications are not
routinely prescribed.
Ten days of follow-up care are included in the fee, after which, most patients are discharged.
